英语学习中，当我们要用英语表示“多于某个数”“少于某个数”或“大约在某一范围内的数”时，常常不知所措。其实，这些问题都属于“约数”的范畴。“约数”就是一个不确定的数。在汉语中，我们通常将其表述为“左右”“大约”“将近”“……多”或“不足……”等。英语中“约数”的表达法有多种，现就课本中出现的几种情况作一归纳，供同学们学习时参考。
一、用形容词表达“约数”。常用的形容词有some，many，much，few，little，several，enough等。如：
Didn’the give you some money?
他难道没有给你一些钱?
My friend can speak several languages．
我的朋友能说几种语言。
二、 用副词表达“约数”。常用的副词有about，around，nearly，
almost，hardly，some等。如：
We have about forty minutes to go．
我们大约还要走40分钟的路。
The Great Wall is around 6，700 kilometres long．
长城大约有6700公里长。
Almost no one took any rest．
几乎没有人休息。
三、用介词表达“约数”。常用的介词有above，over，below,under，past等。如：
There is nothing in this shop above five pounds．
这家商店没有售价超过五英镑的商品。
The high building is over 200 metres．
这座高楼超过200米。
Under 20 people were present then．
当时到场人数不到20个。
四、用数词表达“约数”。常用的数词有tens，hundreds，thousands，millions及billions等。用这些数词表示约数时，其后通常跟介词of。如：
Tens of thousands of trees will be planted there．
那里将种植成千上万棵树。
Hundreds of Young Pioneers will visit the new factory．
成千上万名少先队员将参观这座新工厂。
五、用词组表达“约数”。常用的词组有or so，more or less，a number of，less than,more than等。如：
There are ten books or so in my schoolbag．
我书包里大约有10本书。
The car went sixty kilometres，more or less．
这辆汽车走了60公里左右。
I have a number of things to do．
我有许多事情要做。
另外，用“or”也可表达“约数”。如：
He goes there once every two or three days.
他每隔两三天去那里一次。
He*9謘ll be back one or two days.
他一两天就回来。
