三、句式点睛
　　
　　1. While listening to the tape you will hear that ... are repeated a few times ...听磁带的时候，你会听到……被重复几次。
　　这里的while listening为省略句，完整形式应为：While you are listening to ...，在时间或条件状语从句中，如果从句的主语与主句的主语相同或者从句的主语是it且从句中有be动词的各种形式时，从句的主语和be动词可以省略。例如：
　　You must be careful when (you are) cro-ssing the street.过马路时你务必要小心。
　　When (she was) told the news, she got very excited.当得知这个消息时，她很激动。
　　We can go there if (it is) necessary. 如果有必要，我们可以去那里。
　　Give him a hand if (it is) possible.如果可能的话，帮一帮他。
　　2. In the end the government lawyers in the capital said that the bus company was wrong to separate blacks from whites.最后，该州的政府律师说，公共汽车公司把黑人与白人分开是错误的。
　　句中的separate ... from ... 意为“把……分开”，separate通常是指把原来连在一起或靠近的事物 “分离，分开”，separate也可作形容词，表示“单独的”。例如：
　　Please separate the white shirts from the colored ones.请把白衬衫与有颜色的衬衫分开。
　　The Pacific separates Asia from America.太平洋把亚洲和美洲隔开。
　　The word has two separate meanings. 这个单词有两种不同的意思。
　　注意separate与divide的区别，divide指把整体“划分”成若干份，其后接into, from, among (between), with等。例如：
　　The island is divided into two parts.这个岛屿被分成两部分。
　　He divided the cake among the children.他把这块蛋糕分给了孩子们。
　　3. It was during the “March on Wa-shington DC” in 1963 that he gave the speech “I Have a Dream”,… 他是在1963年“向华盛顿游行”时发表了那篇演讲《我有一个梦想》，……
　　本句为强调句，强调句的基本结构为：It is / was + 强调部分 + that / who / whom + 其他部分。此结构强调的成分仅限于主语、宾语和状语。例如：
　　It was twenty years ago that I met him for the first time.我第一次遇到他是在二十年前。
　　It is Li Lei who comes to school early every day.每天早早到学校的是李雷。
　　It is him whom you should make an apology to.你应该向他道歉。
　　对not ... until句型强调时，要把not和until引导的短语或从句共同置于“强调部分”的位置，而且that从句中不再使用倒装语序，即“It is / was not until ... that ...”。例如：
　　He did not start to read until he was ten years old. （一般句式）

It was not until he was ten years old that he started to read. （强调句）
　　4. In 1893, New Zealand became the first country in the world to give women the right to vote.在1893年，新西兰成为世界上第一个赋予妇女选举权的国家。
　　to give women the right to vote在句中作定语修饰the first country。当中心词是the last, the only, the next 或受到the last, the only, the next 修饰时，名词可跟不定式作后置定语。例如：
　　Who was the last to finish the marathon that day? 那天是谁最后一个跑完马拉松比赛的？
　　He was the only one to finish the task in time.他是唯一一个按时完成任务的人。
　　In 1911, Madam Curie received a second Nobel Prize for her research, the first person in the world to receive two Nobel Prizes. 1911年，居里夫人因为她的研究第二次获得诺贝尔奖，这使她成为第一个获得两次诺贝尔奖的人。
　　动词不定式作后置定语还需注意：
　　1） 若动词不定式是不及物动词时，则要带上与之搭配的介词，构成及物动词短语，这时介词不能省略，因为被修饰的名词是它的宾语。例如：
　　We don’t have enough paper to write on.我们没有足够的纸写字。
　　We have only a small cold room to live in.我们只有寒室一间来居住。
　　2）根据不同的句意，不定式可用主动语态或被动语态。例如：
　　Have you got anything to post?(post的动作执行者是“你”)
　　Have you got anything to be posted? (post的动作执行者是“我”或“别人”)
