学会赞美 1.Everyday stuff The following everyday adjectives describe an adion,event or person that/who deserves praise:amazing, brilliant, excellent, fantastic,great, incredible, magnificent, tremendous,wonderful Remember that outstanding can mean "not paidyet"("outstanding debts'), but also "extremely good": Roger federer is the outstanding tennisplay of his generstion. The word awesome is often used to talk aboutachievements: Awesome Federer takes title. The word praiseworthy is used to talk aboutsomething that may not be lotally worthy of praise:The programme made a praiseworthy effor to expose corruption. 2.lt combines The noun "praise" combines with a small number ofadjedives: His first novel received high praise. Our department was singled out for special praise. Nobody likes empty praise. (= insincere)Apples new phone has been damned by faint praise from Microsoft. (= to praise something a li111ebit, but showing that you don1 really mean it) 3.What comes next? Notice the strudures that follow the verb "praise". Praise+dired object:It's not often my wife praises my cooking. Praise + somebody/something+for + noun: He praised parents for giving up so much of their time for the school. Praise+somebody/something+as+something: The president praised the initiative as a newdirection in energy policy, 4.Ways and means You can refer to praise without using the word "praise":say good things about somebody People have been saying good things about her work. speak highly of somebodynay tribute to Most people speak highly of the doctors and nurses. pay tribute to Thousands of people paid tribute at Wembley to the life of Princess Diana. 5.Too much Sometimes people can praise others so much that it doesn't seem genuine: heap(or shower) praise The prime minister heaped praise on the president. rave about somebody/something Why are you always raving about Ricky Gervais? gush 6.What do you really want?
