　　At the end of an AP course, students have the option of taking the AP Test for that course. These are nationally administered examinations, and students who perform well can earn college credit and fulfill college class requirements before even setting foot in a college.Due to the highly competitive nature of college admissions, many students attempt to boost their GPA’s by taking as many AP courses as possible.Sometimes, this works to the detriment of students as they are unable to keep up with all their coursework.

　　What a student does outside of the classroom also figures in heavily into the strength of his or her application.Extracurricular activities may include pursuits in sports, clubs, music, volunteer work, and community service.Colleges look for students who have demonstrated consistency and leadership in the pursuit of these outside interests.Captain of the tennis team, editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, president of the Kiwanis club, these are just a few examples of posts that students often pursue, sometimes, unfortunately, for the sole purpose of strengthening their college applications.

　　The SAT, or the Standardized Aptitude Test, is the equivalent of the college entrance examination in many other parts of the world.Although it is important, it is just one part of a multifaceted application process.Most colleges require that applicants take the SAT, and students typically do so their junior year of high school.The SAT tests a student's general aptitude in 3 subject areas: math, writing, and reasoning.Each section is worth 800 points, with the entire test scored on a scale of 600-2400.Many students enroll in SAT preparation schools before the test.They train in test taking methods and participate in practice examinations to enhance their performance on the actual test.

　　All of the elements of the application mentioned above are judged by the colleges on performance-based criteria, meaning that those who perform better tend to have an advantage.There is one part of the application, however, that adds an element of unpredictability to the whole process, and that is the personal statement.Colleges typically ask applicants to write a short essay to include with their application.Essay topics tend to be broad, and their purpose is to help admissions officials get a better sense of the applicant as a person.Students commonly write about their background, personal interests, difficult past experiences, and goals.The essay is the part of the application that students have the most control over.Even if a student's SAT score or grades are not the best, an informative and attention-grabbing essay could result in the student’s acceptance to the school.
