How to SAY IT
  
  1.have one’s eye on 看上、留意;想要
  注解:注意该语的介词搭配的on,其后可跟人、物。原意为“留意看一眼”,亦可作get one’s eye on,引申为试图占有或想得到。此语中的one’s可用其他形容词来代替,诸如have (cast) an evil eye on someone(用毒眼看人,不怀好意地看人)。
  情景例句:
  A: Paul, I’ll be back from Shanghai next Monday. Do you want something?
  B: You, a lucky guy, are always on the business trip, pay attention to your health during this week.
  A: How about that mini-video? I know you have been having your eye on it for long.
  B: Great, just you know what I want. I think it will be cheaper in Shanghai.
  A: OK, that’s settled then.
  B: Thanks. Call me when you’re back.
  A:保罗,我下星期一从上海回来,你想要什么吗?
  B:你这个幸运的家伙,总有出差机会,注意一下身体。

  2.have the last laugh 获得最后胜利
  注解:此语意为“看上去是失败,但却获得最后胜利,最后证明是正确的。”此语亦作 get the last laugh.
  情景例句:
  A: You have the last laugh. Congratulations on your success!
  B: Thank you.
  A: I’m sorry for what I said before.
  B: You shouldn’t. It was your words that encouraged me to work harder.
  A: Doing everything must have courage, right?
  B: Yeah. I still remember you said I was mad when starting to work to this invention.
  A:你获得了最后的胜利。我对你的成功表示祝贺。
  B:谢谢你。
  A:对我以前说过的话我表示歉意。

  3.heat wave 热浪,酷暑
  注解:此语指一年中最热的一段时间,且持续的时间较长。如:During the heat wave of 1988, the compilation work went on without cease.(在1988年的酷暑,编撰工作继续进行。)
  情景例句:
  A: Summer is coming again.
  B: It’s good news. I like it. We can put on our beautiful, colorful skirts again.
  A: But I don’t like it.
  B: Why? You can go shopping, go swimming, a nice season, and right?
  A: Yeah. Did you forget the heat wave of last summer? I was almost burned by the sun.
  B: It was abnormal. I think it won’t happen again.

  4.hedge about with 感情受到限制;感到不自由
  注解:“hedge”一词最基本的含义指“篱笆、树篱”,引申为“限制、障碍”等。在这里用作动词,字面含义为make a hedge around an area of land(用树篱或其他障碍物围住或隔开),此词亦作hedge in/around/round with。转引喻指感情时,则指“感情受到限制,感到不自由”。
  情景例句:
  A: I hear you’re going to start your own business.
  B: Yeah. I’ve prepared for a whole year.
  A: But you’ll be hedged about with lots of rules and regulations.
  B: I know there will be various kinds of trouble-makers.
  A: I wish you good luck!
  B: Thanks, I’m fully prepared, as long as our laws are in effect.
  A:我听说你开始自己干了。

  5.hem and haw嗯嗯呃呃,支支吾吾
  注解:hem为拟声词,指清嗓子时发出的轻咳声,haw则指踌躇,支吾时所发的呃声。此语亦作hum and haw, um and aah.莎士比亚还曾用过hem and hawk, hem and ha, hum and ha等形式,都表示说话踌躇不决。
  情景例句:
  A: Why do you talk with me hem and haw?
  B: I just don’t know how to say it.
  A: Oh, I see. Tell me the truth, OK?
  B: Right.
  A:你怎么和我说话支支吾吾的?
  B:我不知该怎么说。
  A:噢,我明白了。告诉我真相,好吗?

  6.hide one’s light under a bushel不露锋芒;过分谦逊
  注解:Bushel是英美用来计量谷物、水果、蔬菜等的容量单位,也指容量为一蒲式耳的木制或泥制容器。此语出自《圣经·新约》《马太福音》第5章第14~15节耶稣在山上对门徒的训示即山上宝训(the Sermon on the Mount)的其中一段话:“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.”(你们是世上的光。城造在山上是不能隐藏的。人点灯,不放在斗底下,是放在登台上,就照亮一家的人。)此语亦作hide one’s candle under a bushel。情景例句:
  A: The new clerk was a clever mathematician but was content to hide his light under a bushel.
  B: There are few people like him in this world now.
  A: Yeah, a lot of people believe that showing themselves in every aspect is the truth of life.
  B: They think they will get the entire thing they want to do in such way.
  A: But things always don’t go on as what we expected.

  注解:hit below the belt源于拳击运动。根据“昆斯伯里侯爵规则”(the Marquis of Queensbury Rules):打击对手腰部以下部位即为犯规行动。hit below the belt便喻指“犯规,暗箭伤人;玩卑鄙手段”。
  情景例句:
  A: Why do you think of him that way?
  B: Because I have been conned by him several times.
  A: You mean he hit you below the belt?
  B: Yeah. He badmouthed me and stole the show.
  A:你为什么会那么想他?
  B:因为我吃过他几次亏了。

  8.hit the roof大发雷霆;(物价)上涨超过最高限度
  注解:此语与hit the ceiling一语相同,如:When Emily came home at three in the morning, her father hit the roof. (埃米莉凌晨3点回家时,她的父亲大发雷霆。) 此语也可写作go through the roof。
  情景例句:
  A: Please put that back before the teacher sees you and hits the roof!
  B: The teacher will not come here this time.
  A: You should be careful!
  B: Never mind.
  A: 趁老师没看见之前放好了,免得他大发雷霆。
  B: 老师这会不会来。
  A: 还是小心点好。

  9.Hobson’s choice 霍布森选择法——无可选择,没有选择的余地
  注解:1712年10月14日第509期的《参观者》(Spectator)杂志刊登斯帝尔(Steele)的文章,说明此语的起源。托拜厄斯·霍布森(Tobias Hobson)在剑桥开了一间客栈,并出租马匹,他有许多马,但只让租马人拉最靠门厩的马,而不容选择。此语就因而产生。其实,霍布森的这种做法是有道理的。因为靠近厩门的马休息时间最长。此人当时押有大量财产,在剑桥举办过多次宴会,有一条就以他的名字来命名。
  情景例句:
  A: I don’t want to go home. They are quarrelling with each other every day.
  B: But you are penniless now.
  A: So it is a case of Hobson’s choice for me.
  B: Yeah.

1.ifs and buts 借口,托词
  注解:此语含义为if you don’t want any ifs and buts, you want someone to do something quickly without arguing. If一词在此为名词。此语也可写作ifs, ands, 或buts,如:No ifs and buts—just make sure the job is done by tomorrow.(别吵了——要保证到明天为止工作能完成。)
  场景对话:
  A: What does the boss say?
  B: She wants this work finished before we go home.
  A: But we have ...
  B: We’ll have no ifs and buts from any of us.
  A: Oh. Time is so limited.
  B: Yeah. So let’s begin now.

  注解:该习语的意思是“在某人准备好的时候”。例如:I’ll speak to him about it in my own good time.(我会在方便的时候告诉他这件事的。)注意它与其他短语的区别:in good time表示“及时,及早”;in one’s own time表示“在空闲时间”;in one’s time表示“在某人年轻时;在某人一生中的某个时期”。
  场景对话:
  A: What are you doing all the time? I find you’re so busy.
  B: Yeah. Now I have a part-time job at the radio station.
  A: Wonderful. Mary, would you mind going shopping with me someday?
  B: Certainly not. You can call on me in your own good time.

  1. dogsbody 杂役,做别人都不愿意做的事情的人
  A: How’s your new job?
  你的新工作怎么样?
  B: You know what, the job turned out to be a little more than a role for an office dogsbody. I don’t understand why they need someone with a master’s degree and ten years’ work experience to do that.
   你知道吗,这个工作实际就是做杂役,我真搞不懂他们为什么要雇一个有硕士学位、10年工作经验的人来做这些。
  A: So your job description has nothing to do with what you actually do day to day?
  你是说当初招聘你时,所写的那些工作职责,和你实际每天做的都不同咯?
  B: Yes, instead of “managing complex cases”, I found myself photocopying and tidying up files, it is such a waster of taxpayer’s money because someone on half my salary could do the same job.
