(Ice Station Antarctica)
40 research stations, dotted across this vast wilderness,
为整个南极洲气候模型提供数据 provide all the data for the whole of Antarctica's weather patterns.
Because there are so few measurement stations in Antarctica,
如果我们缺少了任何一个数据的话 and we get a call from the Met Office
-就会接到气象局的电话 -真的吗 - if we start to miss more than one. - Really?
Yes. - Oh, well, that's good because, of course,
因为数据必须具有连续性 you have to have that spread of data,
不然那些模型就没用了 otherwise the models don't work as well.
Each weather balloon is filled with helium
能让它上升到大气层 to lift it high into the atmosphere,
上面都携带叫做无线电探空仪的白色盒子 and it carries a little white box called a radiosonde.
So, this measures pressure, temperature and relative humidity,
而且里面还有全球定位系统 and it's also got a GPS in it.
And the key thing is that it's giving us a profile
And you're getting these things up to what sort of height?
So, we're interested at the height of about 10km,
但它们会一直升至25到30千米 but they continue on up to about 25-30km.
But they get to a huge size, don't they, before they actually burst?
Yeah, about the size of a double-decker bus.
It's hard to believe when you see this thing here.
OK, well, I suppose it's getting towards time to release.
Would you like to launch it?
I'd love to. Thank you.
Yeah, that'd be... that'd be a real privilege, thank you.
OK. - When you're ready.
